Girls flag football is back for a second year for Citrus Belt League teams, beginning in August.

The sport's growth is driven by state-governing bodies and the NFL. It will also be included for both men and women in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.

Flag football is a hit in the CBL with defending league champion Beaumont boasting a huge turnout last season, forcing Cougar coach Frank Kingsley to make cuts. Redlands High coach April Berry also says she made cuts this season.

“Even with making cuts we still have enough on the roster for a frosh level that I wish existed,” Berry said. “That speaks volumes because we have other girls’ sports that are struggling with numbers and couldn't field frosh teams last year.”

Nation-wide, most of the sport’s growth has come in the past five to seven years – though the Florida High School Athletic Association was ahead of its time, starting 20 years ago.

Among the states that have sanctioned the sport for girls are Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Nevada, Alaska, New York, Arizona, Illinois, and California. Colorado and Montana are expected to join the party this school year.

This season Citrus Valley, Redlands and Redlands East Valley high schools all play from three to six non-league games, following by their CBL schedule.
