SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. — San Bernardino County officials are warning residents about misleading letters that appear to be official notices demanding payment for liens. The letters, which often cite legitimate public records, are being sent by third-party solicitors attempting to trick recipients into sending money under false pretenses.

“These scam letters are designed to mislead and intimidate recipients into paying third-party companies that pass off as government entities,” said Josie Gonzales, San Bernardino County Assessor-Recorder-County Clerk. “I urge all our residents to carefully verify any such correspondence before acting.”

County Auditor-Controller/Treasurer/Tax Collector Ensen Mason echoed the concern, urging residents to be cautious when responding to payment requests that seem unusual or use high-pressure tactics.

“Taxpayers should always use caution when sending money to someone claiming to be a public agency, especially if they use threats or pressure tactics,” Mason said. “If you receive something from our office that appears suspicious, please reach out to us before making a payment.”

District Attorney Jason Anderson said his office is aware of the deceptive notices and confirmed that they appear to originate from a third party posing as a government organization.

“If you believe you are a victim of a scam or theft, we urge you to contact your local law enforcement agency to make a report,” Anderson said.

Officials are advising residents to take the following precautions:

  • Verify the source: Authentic government correspondence will be on official letterhead and include legitimate contact information.
  • Check public records: Individuals can confirm lien filings by visiting arc.sbcounty.gov/official-records or going to the San Bernardino or Hesperia Recorder offices.
  • Watch for red flags: Be wary of urgent payment demands and unsolicited letters that use scare tactics.
  • Protect personal information: Do not share sensitive data with unverified sources.

Residents who have received such letters or suspect fraud are encouraged to contact the Assessor-Recorder-County Clerk at (909) 387-8306 or visit arc.sbcounty.gov. For additional information, contact the Auditor-Controller/Treasurer/Tax Collector’s office at (909) 387-8308 or mytaxcollector.com.
