Former University of Redlands baseball player Daren Espinoza’s name is prominent in social media, and in a good way.

Espinoza is the new baseball coach at Colton High.

He previously coached at Rialto, Citrus Valley, and Redlands East Valley.

Espinoza’s 2017 team won the league title, but by 2018 he realized something was wrong. He resigned as the Citrus Valley baseball coach and accepted a job as the English learner coordinator at REV.

Espinoza, a former San Gorgonio High star, is known for his tough, no-nonsense approach. He does not like coaches who let their assistants sit on buckets, and other such foolishness.

Espinoza was inducted into the Rialto Sports Hall of Fame in 2024 for his contributions to the Rialto High baseball program.

But the coach’s biggest achievement was arguably beating cancer. In June 2018, Espinoza underwent a five-hour surgery that removed 18 inches of colon, which was then reattached. He was diagnosed with stage 3B colon cancer — which he battled with his typical pluck, including running and lifting to make himself more fit.

“I think it goes back to how he was raised on the other side of Del Rosa (San Bernardino), which was not a great place to live in the early 1980s,” former Rialto High football coach and later principal Frank Jimenez said in 2021. “Every morning at 4:30 a.m., he’s at 24-Hour Fitness and he’s running his 6 miles. He blows me away.”

FAIMALO NEW REV GIRLS BASKETBALL COACH

The pick is in for the new Redlands East Valley High girls basketball coach, and the choice is Tyra Faimalo, 27, a former REV player.

“I plan to focus on player development, basketball IQ, and elements outside of basketball,” said Faimalo, who is a California State University Maritime Academy of Vallejo graduate. “Hopefully it will transfer to the real world.”

Faimalo, 27, was chosen in June to replace Robert Tompkins, who resigned following the season.

Faimalo is an off-campus coach and a paraprofessional (teacher’s aide) at a third-party venue.

She was an assistant last season at Citrus Valley. She played first at Mt. San Jacinto College, then at Cal Maritime.

“I’m excited and nervous, but mostly nervous,” Faimalo said.
