REDLANDS, Calif. — A new 90-room hotel, express-style car wash, and drive-through coffee shop could soon rise at 913 California St., pending city approval and environmental clearance. The city of Redlands released an Initial Study/Mitigated Negative Declaration (IS/MND) for the 5.1-acre development, now under public review through July 28.

Known as The Commons at California, the project would subdivide the currently vacant triangular parcel into three lots, adding new commercial activity along a corridor that borders the city of Loma Linda. The project site is located between Interstate 10, the Metrolink rail line and Mission Channel, with access from California Street.

According to planning documents, the four-story hotel would include guest amenities such as a pool, fitness center, and meeting space. The drive-through coffee shop, Better Bew, would operate from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily. The car wash, Quick Quack Car Wash, would operate from a.m. to 7 p.m. daily. A total of 155 parking spaces and nearly 79,000 square feet of landscaping are included in the plan.

The city determined the project would not result in significant environmental impacts if mitigation measures are implemented. Key areas of analysis included air quality, noise, stormwater runoff and traffic circulation. A new signalized entrance on California Street is proposed to manage vehicle flow.

Due to public feedback during the initial comment period, the city extended the comment period to July 28.

The full environmental study is available at cityofredlands.org/post/environmental-documents, and written comments can be sent to Principal Planner Sean Reilly at sreilly@cityofredlands.org.

The project is expected to go before the Planning Commission Aug. 12, according to the city of Redlands major projects list.
