It’s baseball season, and I don’t just sit in my lawn chair and drink soda while watching games. I also eavesdrop.
What I hear from fans is pet phrases that often need de-coding. As a service to you, dear reader, I will explain some of baseball and softball’s typical fan utterances:
“Nobody hurt.” Translation: We just screwed up royally and may not recover, but an ambulance wasn’t summoned, so it’s all good.
“We got a guy.” Translation: There’s a lazy flyball to center field that anyone not named Aaron Judge could catch in his hip pocket and probably will. God willing.
“Nobody better.” Translation: Yes, our guy is hitting 0.50, bats ninth and hasn’t knocked in a run since tee-ball, but he’s the ideal hitter for this situation.
“Find a way.” Translation: Yes, Mr. 0.50 hitter is digging in and confidence is low, but if he can just get hit in the head by a pitch or coax a walk out of Sandy Koufax, we’ll have a baserunner.
“It’s all you.” Translation: No idea. It’s all up to you? The rest of the team doesn’t matter? Enlighten me.
“You got this.” Translation: A vote of confidence, even if the grammar is lacking.
“So what?”: The other team just hammered a grand slam over the centerfield fence, but somehow this doesn’t matter. After all, “nobody’s hurt.”
Don’t look now, but the Redlands East Valley High stadium is all but finished. Which is to say, it now has home and visitors’ bleachers – a development that only took 28 years.
REV athletic director Chad Blatchley said the district needs to sign off on the visiting stands, but otherwise the stadium is good to go.
“It’s amazing,” Blatchley said. “We had a track meet against Yucaipa and had fans in the stands and it was a great day, and people were talking about what a great view they had.”
REV will play all home football games on its campus in 2025 and the first Smudge Pot game, against rival Redlands, is scheduled for REV the following year. Should be a party.
The Boras Baseball Classic is a top-notch high school tournament, no doubt. It features 32 of the best teams in the state. But it has always overstated its importance. Consider its recent entry on X: “The stage is set @CoronaPBaseball (South) will meet @smhsramsball (North) April 26 at noon in San Diego to name de-facto state champion.”
Wrong. It is not a de-facto state championship. Many top teams were not even involved, such as St. Francis of Mountain View.
The REV baseball team completed its three-game sweep of Cajon, defeating the Cowboys 10-1 on Thursday. The Wildcats now lead Citrus Valley and Yucaipa by one game apiece in the Citrus Belt League standings and are two games ahead of Cajon.
REV has won seven consecutive games, dating back to a 6-5 loss to last-place Beaumont on April 1.
The Redlands High boys volleyball team fell to Beaumont 3-2 in a CBL showdown on Thursday. The loss dropped the Terriers (16-6 overall, 8-2 league) to second place in league behind Beaumont (18-9, 9-1). Redlands defeated Beaumont 3-1 in the first round.
I love the NFL draft. It is Thursday through Sunday, and I can’t wait.
One year I invited a co-worker over and we barbecued. But the first round took so long that we ate so much food and watched for so long that we both wound up sprawled on my living room floor with our stomachs protruding, sound asleep.
We’re both 49ers’ fans and the fact that they picked first-round bust quarterback Jim Druckenmiller made things worse.
No matter. Thursday I’ll be glued to my TV set when it all begins.
Yucaipa High football and wrestling star Will McHargue has committed to the US Coast Guard Academy, according to McHargue’s social media.
Former area athlete and coach Reggie Thompkins is now the superintendent for Alvord Unified in Riverside. He attended Pacific and Cajon high schools.
