SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. — With secured property tax bills set to be mailed in early October, San Bernardino County officials are warning residents to watch out for scams targeting property owners.

Auditor-Controller/Treasurer/Tax Collector Ensen Mason said scammers may attempt to send fake bills or make fraudulent calls requesting payment.

“Our office never initiates unsolicited phone calls or emails requesting payment for secured property taxes. If you receive such a call or message, it is a scam,” Mason said in a statement.

The county will mail secured property tax bills for the 2025–26 fiscal year in early October. Payments should only be made through official, secure channels, Mason said. The most secure method is online through the county’s website, but residents may also pay by mail or in person at the Tax Collector’s Office, 268 W. Hospitality Lane, First Floor, San Bernardino.

Officials advised residents not to respond to unsolicited phone calls, emails, or text messages requesting payments or credit card information, and to be wary of fake or suspicious notices. Suspected fraud should be reported to the Tax Collector’s Office or local law enforcement.

San Bernardino County Assessor-Recorder-County Clerk Josie Gonzales stressed that her office is not involved in tax collections.

“While the Assessor’s Office is responsible for valuing property and applying exemptions, we never collect payments for property taxes,” Gonzales said. “If you receive a suspicious phone call, email, or letter demanding payment from the Assessor’s Office, it is fraudulent.”
