The Torrey Pines trail system is one of our favorite places to hike, and one of only three places we’ve returned to before hitting all the hikes on our list.
It’s a network of trails over the 2,000-acre Torrey Pines Nature Reserve, where you can do a short or long loop and then add loops until you've had your fill.
There are multiple overlooks with views of the ocean. We did about five miles going up and down the bluff our first time. The second time we did all the trails.

Expect periodic steepness. My legs got good and tired more than once.
And there are Porta Potties in the parking lot, so if you need this after the long drive from Redlands, you’re all set.
After hiking, we grabbed sandwiches and beers from the nearby Cliffhanger Cafe. This is on a cliff where paragliders were launching and landing. Pilots take regular people up for a soar in their laps.
They just walk/hop to the edge and wait a sec before they float away. It was fabulous entertainment.

There’s also a falconry school on the grounds.
And again, Porta Potties in the parking lot. Bring your own wet wipes for cleaning your hands. Or hit me up for one. I’m never without my wet wipes.
I got a chicken pesto, provolone and sun dried tomato sandwich. Doug got turkey, tomatoes and I don't know what else. They also have salads and ice creams. We wanted ice cream sandwiches and Drumsticks but we're grown-ups with discipline and dignity.
On the way home we were wishing we had ice creams. I documented our sadness.

Before we were even out of the San Diego area I was mid-sentence reading our book aloud when Doug said suddenly, "I want some coffee."
We pulled off the freeway at the Bernardo Winery because Google said the Manzanita Roasting Coffee House was on the grounds. Doug got coffee while I went into the winery’s chocolate shop. The cashier, who had a glass of wine, asked a guy in the shop if he was staying the night, so apparently there's lodging there. I bought a bag of chocolate covered mini grahams with sea salt sprinkles.
We found a beautiful place to sit on an arbored patio with our coffee and chocolates and soaked up the peaceful. People were walking around with glasses of wine.
"This was the best day ever," we both said again. Seriously.
