Breakaway Femmes, a documentary chronicling the pioneering women of professional cycling in the Tour de France during the 1980s, will be screened Sunday, March 8, at the Finkelstein Performing Arts Center Auditorium at Crafton Hills College.

The screening offers audiences an opportunity to see the film ahead of its U.S. release and meet a cyclist featured in the documentary.

The event, hosted by AAUW Redlands in collaboration with the Redlands Bicycle Classic and Cyclery USA, begins at 2 p.m., with doors opening at 1:30 p.m.

About the documentary film: Breakaway Femmes tells the story of the women’s Tour de France, which ran for six years alongside the men’s race. Female cyclists competed on the same courses and before the same crowds while facing systemic discrimination, financial instability, injuries and the emerging culture of doping in professional cycling. The film revisits the athletes’ experiences more than three decades later, reflecting on their accomplishments and the lasting bonds formed through the sport.

Local connection: The screening will be introduced by Redlands' athlete Patty Peoples, a member of the 1984 U.S. Women’s Tour de France team and a featured athlete in the documentary. Peoples will return to the stage following the film for a moderated discussion and audience Q&A.

“This film gives long-overdue recognition to women whose achievements helped shape the future of professional sports,” said Amy Bisek, co-president of AAUW Redlands. “In a community that celebrates cycling and women, their stories resonate in a particularly powerful way.”

Event details: Tickets are $20 for general admission and $15 for students and are available through Eventbrite. Parking is free, with lots E and F closest to the venue.

The screening supports the American Association of University Women’s mission to advance gender equity through education, advocacy and leadership programs.
