Beyond the farm, The Grove School blends Montessori, academics

REDLANDS — On a recent afternoon at The Grove School, students in the AAES club tended live stock and worked on a senior project building a “juvenile chicken coop,” while inside a science classroom a teacher was finishing up a lesson in chain-reactions for middle school physics elective. The activity reflects what school leaders say defines the campus: hands-on learning rooted in strong academics.

Lottery enrollment for the 2026–27 school year is open through March 31 at the public Montessori charter school serving grades 7–12.

The Grove describes its mission as empowering adolescents “to become engaged and respectful world citizens through a comprehensive Montessori program,” guiding students in their “work of self-construction” while fostering collaboration, cooperation and independence.

Now in its 27th year, The Grove School blends Montessori philosophy with college- and career-focused academics. The school reports a 96% graduation rate and an average college enrollment rate of 78% after graduation. The campus is staffed by 19 fully credentialed educators, all of whom either have or are soon going to have completed at least The AMI Montessori Orientation or Diploma programs.

Hands-on learning meets state standards

Montessori education at the adolescent level emphasizes both intellectual and social development. Students work in mixed-age groupings and follow a mixed block schedule, with longer class periods twice a week that allow for in-depth, project-based learning.

"We are held accountable for the same California state standards as every other public school,” said Melanie Knypstra, Assistant Head of School (Principal). “What sets us apart is the flexibility we have in our curriculum and practices in teaching those standards."

As an example of its pedagogy anchored in student agency, voice and choice, in addition to comprehensive A-G coursework including 11 AP classes, the school offers electives known as “mini courses.” These interest driven courses change quarterly and allow students the opportunity to learn skills to use in adult life. For example, seventh- and eighth-graders take a course titled “Life Skills,” while high school students participate in Senior Seminar and Career Technical Education pathways designed to build practical experience and readiness beyond graduation.

From farm campus to farmers market

The school’s agricultural program — often the most visible feature to visitors — is integrated into its broader educational model. Students help maintain the farm campus, raise animals and grow produce. Through the Grove School Farmers Market, student clubs raise funds for field trips and special projects by selling items such as eggs and other farm products produced on campus.

Knypstra said the emphasis on community is central to the school’s design.

“One of the things that makes Montessori distinct is its emphasis on both community and the belief that students are actively shaping who they are becoming,” she said.

In addition to academics and agricultural studies, students can participate in CIF athletics, middle school sports teams and numerous student-led clubs.

Enrollment and lottery details

The Grove is tuition-free and admits students through a lottery system. Preference categories include siblings of current students, students with Montessori backgrounds and Redlands residents, though families apply from across the region.

As enrollment season continues, Knypstra said she hopes families look beyond the school’s rural setting.

The school’s approach reflects Maria Montessori’s vision that students “pass from one stage of independence to a higher” through their own effort and activity. Knypstra said that focus on independence remains central to The Grove’s program.

Lottery applications are open through March 31. More information about enrollment, campus tours and application requirements is available at The Grove School’s website.
