Banning woman, 83, killed in Redlands crash with power pole

Police say medical emergency may have caused fatal crash on Barton Road; westbound lanes closed for five hours during investigation

REDLANDS, Calif. — An 83-year-old woman from Banning was killed Wednesday morning when her pickup truck veered off Barton Road and struck a power pole, Redlands police said in a news release Thursday.

The single-vehicle crash was reported shortly after 11 a.m. May 7 in the 1600 block of Barton Road, west of Alabama Street. Police and firefighters arrived to find the driver unresponsive in a 1990 Chevrolet 2500 pickup. Despite life-saving efforts by paramedics, the woman was pronounced dead at the scene.

According to the Redlands Police Department, the woman had been driving west on Barton Road when she failed to follow a curve and drove off the road, hitting a Southern California Edison power pole at about 40 mph. Investigators believe she may have suffered a medical emergency prior to the collision.

A passing driver stopped and attempted to help before emergency crews arrived but was unable to find a pulse, authorities said.

Westbound lanes on Barton Road were closed for about five hours during the investigation.

The crash remains under investigation.
