A tribal Yuhaaviatam billboard along Interstate 10 in Yucaipa was defaced with an anti-Native Thanksgiving message. City officials condemned the vandalism and asked the public for tips.
YUCAIPA, Calif. — A Yuhaaviatam billboard along Interstate 10 was vandalized this week with a politically charged message pasted over the original advertisement, according to a photo posted Wednesday on X by user FirePhotoGirl.
The altered billboard, near Yucaipa, was covered with yellow lettering that read, “America is not on stolen land, your ancestors were conquered — Happy Thanksgiving.” The vandalism appeared just two days before the holiday, prompting a swift reaction from city officials.
In a statement released Friday, the city of Yucaipa said it “strongly condemns the vandalism of the Yuhaaviatam billboard along the I-10 freeway.”
“This is a criminal act, and we are working closely with the Yucaipa Police Department to identify those responsible and bring them to justice,” the statement said.
Officials are asking anyone with information to contact the Yucaipa Police Department at 909-790-3100 and reference Deputy Report #142503512.
The Yuhaaviatam of the San Manuel Nation – owners of the Yaamava’ Resort & Casino in nearby Highland – had not issued a public statement as of Friday.
The incident adds to a series of politically motivated or rhetoric-driven displays seen across Southern California during major holidays and election cycles.
