A stronger grid starts with us

The term “Inland Empire” was first used in 1914 to describe the area stretching from the San Bernardino Mountains to the Coachella Valley. The name created awareness of the special culture, geography and interests of the Inland Empire separate and distinct from our coastal neighbors in Southern California. The unique nature of our area endures, especially concerning our energy needs. That’s why my organization is working hand-in-hand this summer with a program from the California Public Utilities Commission called Power Saver Rewards.

Power Saver Rewards is a free, statewide initiative designed to protect California’s power grid during periods of extreme heat and high electricity demand. When energy use spikes, typically from 4 to 9 PM, the grid can become strained, causing a Flex Alert to be called. That’s where you come in.

By enrolling at PowerSaverRewards.org, Redlands residents can take simple, voluntary steps to reduce electricity use during an issued Flex Alert between May and October. In return, you’ll receive automatic credits on your energy bill. It’s a win-win: you receive a credit while helping to protect the grid for everyone.

Participation is easy. Once you sign up, you don’t need to do anything else other than reduce your energy use during a Flex Alert. The program tracks your energy use and rewards you when you reduce consumption during a Flex Alert. Whether it’s adjusting your thermostat a few degrees, delaying laundry, or turning off unused lights, your small actions can make a big difference.

But this program is about more than just energy savings, it’s about community resilience. At the Redlands Chamber of Commerce, we believe in building an environment that supports not only economic growth but the educational, cultural, and civic vitality of our city. Power Saver Rewards aligns perfectly with that mission.

Grid strain doesn’t affect everyone equally. Vulnerable populations, such as seniors, individuals with disabilities, and those dependent on medical devices, are often hit hardest. For them, it isn’t just an inconvenience; it can be a serious health risk. By reducing strain on the grid, we help ensure that critical services remain available to those who need them most.

This is community development in action. Just as we work to strengthen downtown Redlands, support local entrepreneurs, and promote tourism, we also have a role to play in safeguarding our infrastructure. Power Saver Rewards empowers residents to be part of the solution - no special equipment needed, just a shared commitment to looking out for one another.

At the Redlands Chamber, we often say that Redlands is a place where people come to pursue their dreams. Whether you’re launching a new business, raising a family, or enjoying retirement, you’re part of a community that cares. Programs like Power Saver Rewards remind us that even in the face of statewide challenges, local action matters.

So this summer, as temperatures rise and energy demand increases, let’s come together and help our community thrive.
