REDLANDS, Calif. — Redlands police arrested a suspect Monday in connection with a hate crime and assault with a deadly weapon reported last month outside a convenience store, authorities said.

The incident occurred Feb. 1 in the parking lot of a 7-Eleven at 1161 W. Lugonia Ave., according to the Redlands Police Department.

Police said the victim was in the parking lot when a suspect driving a black Volkswagen SUV approached and shouted racial epithets. Investigators said the suspect then attempted to hit the victim with the vehicle.

The victim was able to move out of the way, but the SUV struck his electric bicycle, police said.

Authorities said the suspect then made a U-turn and again attempted to hit the victim while continuing to yell racial slurs. The victim took cover behind the business’s fuel pumps before the suspect fled the scene.

Investigators later identified a suspect and contacted him Monday, March 9, at his home in Redlands, where he was taken into custody.

Police did not immediately release the suspect’s name or booking details.
