Are You Prepared for a Major Disaster?

Accelerate Neighborhood Climate Action (ANCA) invites the community to its monthly program on Wednesday, Jan. 15, at 6:30 p.m. at the Gonzales Community Center. The program will explore why disasters are worsening every year and how individuals can best prepare. Registration is available on Eventbrite.

Hillary Jenkins, a University of Redlands professor with a Ph.D. in Earth and Ocean Sciences, will explain the science behind the increasing frequency, intensity, and duration of disasters and their occurrence in previously unaffected areas. Jenkins will also discuss the types of disasters most likely to impact the Inland Empire as the planet warms.

Following Jenkins’ presentation, ANCA staff will lead an interactive session on how its new Map Your Neighborhood program can help communities prepare. The program focuses on two critical factors for surviving a major disaster: having a neighborhood plan and knowing your neighbors.

Map Your Neighborhood, developed by the Emergency Management Division of the State of Washington, is now offered in communities nationwide.

“The time to do serious planning is before a disaster strikes, not after,” said Ana Vacakis, ANCA Redlands Program Coordinator.

This program is part of ANCA’s ongoing educational series, Resilient Living: Facing Climate Challenges Together. For more information about the event or the Map Your Neighborhood program, contact Ana Vacakis at ana@ancainlandempire.org.
