RCC men capture conference title and place fourth in California behind strong performances from local athletes

Four men from Redlands-area high schools played major roles in Riverside City College finishing fourth at the 77th annual state community college swimming championships earlier this month.

In addition, two local high school graduates helped the RCC women’s team finish 17th at the state meet held at Orange Coast College in Costa Mesa.

Eli Martinez-Spencer and Wyatt Miner, graduates of Redlands High School, along with Bryce Hitter of Citrus Valley High and Jeremiah Ireland of Redlands East Valley High, scored heavily for RCC at the meet.

On the women’s side, REV graduate Ashlyn Allen and Citrus Valley graduate Keira McDonald helped the Tigers score points at the state championships.

Martinez-Spencer won the state title in the 500-yard freestyle in a personal-best 4:29.22. He also placed third in the 100-yard backstroke in 50.41 seconds and second in the 200-yard backstroke in 1:46.89, setting a new RCC record.

Miner won the state championship in the 200-yard butterfly in 1:50.49, finished second in the 200-yard individual medley in 1:48.91 and placed third in the 100-yard butterfly in a personal-best 49.37.

Hitter finished 10th in the state in the 200-yard breaststroke in 2:07.40.

RCC’s 400-yard medley relay team of Martinez-Spencer, Miner, Ireland and Jared Ladinez won the state title in 3:20.43.

Ireland placed eighth in the 200-yard freestyle in 1:42.97 and ninth in the 100-yard freestyle in a personal-best 45.75.

McDonald finished 10th in the state in the 500-yard freestyle in 6:12.04. Allen placed 15th in the 400-yard individual medley and 15th in the 200-yard breaststroke.

Riverside’s men also won the Orange Empire Conference championship last month, with Martinez-Spencer earning “male swimmer of the meet” honors after winning the 100-yard backstroke and 500-yard freestyle.

Miner and Hitter finished first and second in the Orange Empire Conference 200-yard individual medley. Ireland was fourth in the 50-yard freestyle in 21.37 seconds and second in the 200-yard freestyle in 1:40.15.

Hitter also placed fourth in the 400-yard individual medley at the conference meet in 4:19.87.

On the women’s side at the Orange Empire Conference championships, Allen finished third in the 200-yard individual medley in 2:20.69 and fifth in the 400-yard individual medley in 5:02.85.

Both RCC swim teams captured team titles at the Orange Empire Conference championships.

Redlands High Kutsner 16th at State Meet

Redlands High School junior Maxsim Kutsner made the CIF State Championships for the second straight year, winding up 16 th in the 100-yard butterfly in 49.78.

Earlier in the meet that concluded May 16, Kutsner set a personal best of 49.32 in the preliminary round to qualify for the final.

At the CIF Southern Section meet Kutsner swim 50.58 in the 100-yard butterfly preliminaries to earn the fifth qualifying spot in the final, then wound up ninth in the slow time of 55.71 in the finals.

In 2025, Kutsner was second in the Division 2 100-yard butterfly in 49.55 and was fifth in the 2024 Southern Section 100-yard backstroke in 53.28.
