REDLANDS, Calif. — A.K. Smiley Public Library will host a free Día de los Muertos celebration Sunday, Nov. 1, featuring live music, traditional Mexican food, cultural performances and activities for families.

The event will take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Smiley Park and the Contemporary Club, 173 S. Eureka St.

Día de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, is a Mexican tradition honoring deceased loved ones through colorful altars, known as ofrendas, music, food and remembrance.

Community groups and families will display ofrendas inside the Contemporary Club, alongside artwork by local artist Nancy Nieto. The celebration will also feature remarks from the consul of Mexico, a Spanish-language children's story time and a presentation by Nieto about her work.

Outdoor festivities at Smiley Park begin at 11 a.m. with family activities, crafts, face painting and live performances by Mariachi Bohemio and St. Mary's Ballet Folklórico.

Children ages 4 to 12 can participate in a Calavera/Catrina costume contest, celebrating the traditional skeletal figures associated with Día de los Muertos. The library will also showcase entries from its teen art contest and announce the winners.

Free food from Taqueria y Panadería del Valle and ice cream from Nichos Ice Cream will be available beginning at 11 a.m., while supplies last.
